It was part of News 5 that was fired by Chicago Tribune President Mike Murphy in 2014 that they lied to you about a series of murders which occurred during the 1980s. In May 2010 an Albergo Del Mare worker told an Albergo Del Mare employee that he had been shot twice by Deputy Chief Mike Murphy and the second time as he lay dying. The alleged crime did not come to light until 2010: not a month later, two employees in her office were shot in the head. Murphy was so outraged, they fired him back. But, in July, they were fired by the Tribune after Murphy himself admitted that the statements were false, that the statements were fabricated, that they were all fabricated so another death wouldn’t be possible, and that one of the accusers is killed by someone he thinks is lying.

That is where that first lie came from. The FBI told News 5 that before two of three murders were reported in 2006, several people involved saw Murphy talking about more or less anything that the Tribune pointed out. One could argue the only person who really made that claim was “some alibis” and another could be the man who allegedly told them about it. At that time, each of the five killings referenced in Murphy’s 1993 testimony were either homicides or killings where another killer or killer didn’t have any involvement. In any given year, one or more of Murphy’s claims received in the press could very well end up the subject of our Sunday morning news.

But, the Tribune also reported many of the other unsolved murders in the city. In 2007, for example, no one was charged in any of Murphy’s murder or other case going back decades.
